Enabling Zoom captions during a meeting

Note: While the captions are fairly accurate, this service may not fully meet ADA requirements for accommodation. This service does not apply to Zoom Protected accounts.

To turn on captioning, please follow the instructions below.

  1. Look for the Show Captions icon on the Zoom toolbar. Depending on your screen size, it may be under the More menu.
  2. Next, select Show Captions (see Fig. 1). Please note that depending on your role, you may have fewer options in the More menu than are shown in Figure 1.

  3. Hover over the captions area and select the gear icon to access Caption settings. A menu of options appears, such as caption language and settings (see Fig. 2).

  4. Select Caption language to open a menu of languages. Note that these are not translated captions and you should only select the language being spoken in the meeting for accurate captioning. If you select a different language, a dialog box will appear, asking you to select the caption language. Select your caption language and then select Save (see Fig. 3).

  5. Select Caption Settings to adjust how captions appear for you. You can adjust the font size, the caption color, the font type, change the position of the captions. A preview will appear as you adjust your settings. 
  6. Toggle to Always show captions in meetings and webinars if you would like captions to automatically appear in all Zoom meetings you attend. 
  7. To hide the captions, select Hide Captions (see Fig. 4).

  8. If you are the host of the meeting, you have additional caption settings available. To access these settings, select Host Tools from the Zoom toolbar and then select Advanced > Captions to access these settings. This is where you can set up a manual captioner for your meeting.
