To hide grades in the Canvas Gradebook, you must use the Grade Posting Policy.
How to hide grades if your assignment columns is empty
- Go to your Canvas Gradebook.
- Select the 3 dot icon at the top of the assignment column (See Fig. 1).

- Select Grade Posting Policy.
- Change the setting to Manual. The manual setting will hide the grades from the students until you Post Grades. The Automatic setting, which is the default, will show the grades to the students as soon as the assessment has been scored. Changing the setting to Manual will hide any grades that are entered into the column after the setting has been changed.
- Select Save.
- The grades will be hidden from the students until you choose to Post Grades.
How to hide grades if your assignment column already has grades
- Go to your Canvas Gradebook.
- Select the 3 dot icon at the top of the assignment column (See Fig. 1).
- Select Hide Grades (See Fig. 2). This will hide any current grades already in the column so that students can no longer see them. However, it will not hide any future grades in the column.

- Follow the steps 1–5 above to change the Grade Posting Policy to Manual. This will hide future grades from the students until you choose to Post Grades.
Note: You may also set the default posting policy in your course to Manual. To do so, select the Gear icon at the top right of your gradebook and then select the Grade Posting Policy tab. Change the option to Manual and then select Update.
How to show grades
- Go to your Canvas Gradebook.
- Select the 3 dot icon at the top of the assignment column (See Fig. 1).
- Select Post Grades (See Fig. 3).
- A red dot will appear next to those grades that are currently hidden.
- Change the option to Graded (See Fig. 4).
- If you need to post grades for specific sections, select the appropriate boxes.
