There are two options available to caption audio/video slides and comments in VoiceThread.
Automated Captioning via VoiceThread
All audio/video in VoiceThread slides and comments are now automatically captioned. Automated captions are viewed by turning on the closed captioning display within a VoiceThread. Captions should appear on your VoiceThread within 10–15 minutes of saving the audio/video. The automated captions are not ADA compliant without editing by the content specialist to ensure accuracy. Currently, automated captions are only available in English. If English is not detected, the slide/comment will not be captioned. To learn how to edit captions, see more information here.
3PlayMedia professional captioning (recommended for ADA compliance)
3PlayMedia captioning is only available when a student requires it for an accommodation through ADA. 3PlayMedia captioning should be used when needing to meet ADA standards. If your student has an accommodation and you need captioning through 3PlayMedia, please email teachingtools@umsystem.edu, and once we confirm we will give you access. Manual professional captioning by 3PlayMedia should be mostly accurate with minimal editing necessary, mostly for specialized terms. If you use 3PlayMedia, the new manual captions will override any previously existing automated VoiceThread captions. Times vary, but 3PlayMedia captions may take up to a couple of days to process.
