In Canvas, rules can be created to drop the lowest or highest grade(s) in a particular assignment group. Additionally, you can select assignments that should never be dropped as part of these rules.
Setting up rules
To set up a rule, follow these instructions:
- Go to Assignments in your Canvas course.
- Locate the group you would like to add a rule to. Assignments affected by the rule must be in the same assignment group.
- Select the three-dot menu and choose Edit.
- Use the dropdown menus to choose the number of lowest or highest score(s) you'd like to be dropped (see Fig. 1).

- If there are assignments that should never be dropped, add them to the list below (see Fig. 2).

- Select Save.
Important considerations
An assignment group must contain at least one more assignment than the number of actions to be performed in the rules section. For example, if you want to drop the two lowest scores in an assignment group, and there is one score that should never be dropped, that assignment group must contain at least four assignments.
Dropping the lowest score takes both points and percentage into account. In some cases, the point value may be considered more important than the percentage score. For more detailed information and an example, please see How do I create rules for an assignment group?.
