Creating a Multipart assignment using Turnitin LTI 1.3 (Feedback Studio)

Turnitin has recently released a feature allowing the creation of Multipart assignments (e.g., for paper drafts). This feature is only available in LTI 1.3 (Feedback Studio), not in Canvas Plagiarism Framework. To create a Multipart assignment:

Select Assignments in the Navigation Menu.
Select the vertical dot menu icon next to +Assignment and choose Turnitin.
Select the Multipart assignment type (see Fig. 1).

Enter the overall assigment title and then select + Add Part (see Fig. 2).

To create the first part, enter the assignment title and instructions for the first part and select your preferred Start Date, Due Date, and Feedback Release Date (see Fig. 3).
⚠️Note: Turnitin will default to 100 points for the Max Points, with a Start Date corresponding to the current date and time, the Due Date being one week later, and the Feedback Release Date being one week after the due date.
⚠️Note: The Feedback Release Date only reveals the instructor's annotations; it does not show the grade assigned to the paper. You can prevent students from seeing their scores by changing the Grade Posting Policy for that column in the Canvas Gradebook before students begin working on the assignment.

If you wish to upload a template, add a rubric, or add anonymity settings, you can do so (see Fig. 4). A template allows you to upload any portions of the paper that will be common to each student so that those portions are excluded from the similarity report.

Set your submission settings and specify when Turnitin should generate a Similarity Report (see Fig. 5). Please keep in mind that allowing submission of any file type may result in students submitting unsupported file types that cannot be read by Turnitin.

Next, choose whether students will submit their papers to the private institutional repository or whether the papers will not be stored by Turnitin (see Fig. 6). Submitting final drafts to the institutional repository is recommended. It is not recommended to have any draft submissions stored in the repository, as that can result in unwarranted inflation of the Similarity Score.
Additionally, choose sources for comparison (see Fig. 6). In most cases, it is recommended to leave all four options selected (General Turnitin repository, Private institutional repository, Website content, and Periodicals, journals, and publications).

Select optional exclusions from the Similarity report (e.g., exclude bibliographic materials, quoted materials, or small matches) (see Fig. 7). These settings can also be adjusted on a per-student basis while grading, if desired. It is recommended not to use the percent option if you decide to exclude small matches, as this can cause portions of the paper to be excluded from checking by Turnitin. Finally, you can enable translated matching if a non-English paper will be submitted by students; this setting translates the student submission into English for checking against English sources. Not all languages are supported.

To add another part, select + Add Part and repeat steps 5-10.
When you have finished adding parts, select Create Assignment to save your work.
Select Confirm to acknowledge that parts cannot be added, reordered, or deleted after creation.
You will then be taken to your assignments page, where you will see the unpublished parts.
⚠️Note: There is still more to do to make these assignments work for students!
Open each part of the multipart assignment by selecting the name of each part one by one.
Finally, if all looks correct, publish each part of the assignment in Canvas.
