Fall 2026 guidance for ePortfolio tool selection

Tags eportfolio

Due to development delays, Instructure has pushed back the end-of-life date for legacy Canvas ePortfolios and Portfolium/Folio to Dec. 30, 2026. UM Academic Technology will continue to make all three tools (legacy Canvas ePortfolios, Portfolium/Folio and the new Canvas Portfolio) available for the Fall 2026 semester.

We have the following guidance to help you decide how to approach this revised deadline.

Consider staying with legacy Canvas ePortfolios/Portfolium/Folio for the Fall 2026 semester if:

  • Your requirements end with the Fall 2026 semester.

  • Your existing instructions for students are robust, and you would prefer to wait until core features are available in the new Canvas Portfolio tool before migrating.

  • You are prepared to assist students with a potential manual migration of their content to the new tool.

Please note that while we are actively encouraging Canvas to support bulk downloading and migration of the legacy ePortfolio tools, there are no guarantees that these will be available.

Consider migrating to the new Canvas Portfolio tool now if:

  • Your portfolio requirements continue past the Fall 2026 semester.

  • Your requirements and student instructions are flexible to allow for anticipated changes to the platform and new developments or features.

  • You want students to begin adding content to a portfolio system that will be supported longer, to avoid a migration later.

  • You have reviewed the article Comparing Evaluation and Showcase Portfolios and have decided that one of those portfolios will work for you.

If you decide to move to the new Canvas Portfolio tool, we recommend a brief consultation with our team to help prepare you for your migration and to answer any of your questions.
