Respondus LockDown Browser

LockDown Browser a custom browser that locks down the testing environment within Canvas. When students are required to use LockDown Browser for a Canvas Quiz they are unable to print, copy, go to another URL, or access other applications.

NOTE: Respondus Monitor (UMKC Graduate courses only)

Please note that Lockdown Browser does not include Respondus Monitor. Monitor is for UMKC GRADUATE COURSES ONLY. Do not use if your course is undergraduate level or with MU, S&T or UMSL. Monitor is student-paid ($15/year). Students will be prompted to purchase a license. Monitor is an add-on feature that enables students to record themselves with a webcam during a non-proctored exam.

How can I use LockDown Browser in teaching?

Setting up a quiz in LockDown Browser will prevent students from:

  • Opening other applications.
  • Going to another URL.
  • Printing.
  • Using print screen, copy or paste.
  • Using any right-click functions

What is unique about LockDown Browser?

  • Preventing the above actions minimizes the risks that students will use unauthorized resources while taking a quiz and/or capturing text information to share with others.

Who can use it?

LockDown Browser is available for faculty and students at all four UM System campuses.

How do I get started?

LockDown Browser is a software that must be downloaded and installed on the student's computer. Students can install it on their personal PC or Mac computers. A separate lab version is required for installation in computing sites.
Faculty will enable LockDown Browser within the course Navigation settings.

Note: Students need to use the newest version of LockDown Browser in order to have the fix for flagging Avast or AVG software as a blocked application.
