Keeping YouTube videos in Canvas ad free

YouTube videos embedded in Canvas may begin displaying advertisements due to changes in how Canvas integrates with YouTube. These advertisements are managed by YouTube and cannot be turned off in Canvas.

Share videos with Panopto (recommended solution)

To provide students with a distraction-free experience, we recommend using Panopto to embed the YouTube videos. The videos will play within the Panopto window, and no ads will be shown to viewers.

  1. Create a Panopto video with a brief introduction.
  2. Embed YouTube videos by editing the Panopto recording.
  3. Share the Panopto recording with your students by embedding it on a Canvas module or page.

Use direct YouTube links or embedded videos

If you decide to use direct links to YouTube videos or embed them in your course content, consider including the following disclaimer in the syllabus or a course announcement.

“You may encounter advertisements when viewing YouTube videos in this course. These ads are delivered by YouTube and not affiliated with or endorsed by our university.”
