There are two options available for captioning media in Panopto.
Automated captioning via Panopto
You can add no-cost machine generated captions to Panopto recordings. Machine-generated captions are typically 60-90% accurate, depending on the audio quality of the recording. The automated captions are not ADA-compliant without editing by the content specialist to ensure accuracy.
By default, new folders will have auto-captions enabled, which applies to new videos created in the folders. If users have older folders or videos that do not contain captions, users can manually enable automatic machine caption import on a Panopto folder. Once enabled, new recordings will automatically have captions imported. If existing recordings in the folder need captions you may also add captions to an individual video.
3PlayMedia professional captioning (recommended for ADA compliance)
3PlayMedia captioning is only available when a student requires it for accommodation through ADA. 3PlayMedia captioning should be used when needing to meet ADA standards. If your student has an accommodation and you need captioning through 3PlayMedia, please email teachingtools@umsystem.edu, and once we confirm, we will give you access. Manual professional captioning by 3PlayMedia should be mostly accurate, with minimal editing necessary, mostly for specialized terms. Times vary, but 3PlayMedia captions may take up to a few days to process.
