Why is Workplace Violence Prevention training changing?
MU Health Care regularly reviews Workplace Violence Prevention education based on employee feedback, CPI best practices, and findings from annual Workplace Violence Risk Assessments.
These updates are intended to provide the right training to the right employees based on workplace risk while strengthening prevention efforts, improving skill retention, and increasing employee preparedness.
What is changing?
Two significant changes are being implemented:
1. WVP High is transitioning to a hybrid training model
- CPI online modules (approximately 2 hours)
- Three-hour instructor-led training session
2. PX101 (Patient Experience 101) is being introduced
- A prevention-focused course for employees in low-to-medium risk patient-facing areas
- Focuses on communication, situational awareness, service recovery, and de-escalation strategies
Why was PX101 created?
Annual Workplace Violence Risk Assessment findings identified that many patient-facing areas would benefit most from additional training focused on preventing escalation before it becomes a safety event.
PX101 helps employees:
- Recognize early signs of agitation and escalation
- Build trust through communication
- Utilize service recovery techniques
- Strengthen de-escalation skills
- Reduce preventable escalation
Is PX101 replacing Workplace Violence Prevention training?
No.
PX101 is part of the Workplace Violence Prevention training framework and serves as a proactive prevention strategy for employees working in low-to-medium risk environments.
Employees assigned to higher-risk training levels will continue to complete WVP High or BERT training.
Why did my department's training level change?
Training assignments are reviewed annually through the Workplace Violence Risk Assessment process.
Changes in patient population, environmental factors, operational responsibilities, workplace design, or historical incident data may result in a department being assigned a different training level.
A change in training level does not indicate improved or diminished performance. It reflects the current risk profile and training needs of the department.
What if I want to take additional training above my unit or department classification?
Please complete the training level currently assigned to your unit or department and understand that there may be changes and adjustments in future years based on the Workplace Violence Risk Categorization table.
How are training assignments determined?
Training assignments are based on MU Health Care's annual Workplace Violence Risk Assessment process.
The assessment evaluates factors such as:
- Environmental considerations
- Employee responsibilities
The goal is to ensure employees receive training appropriate for their work environment and level of risk.
Where can I review the Workplace Violence Risk Assessment?
The current Workplace Violence Risk Assessment and associated training requirements can be found here: Workplace Violence - Risk Categorization Table v.8
Why is WVP High changing from 6 hours to 3 hours?
The previous six-hour classroom format included foundational content that can be effectively completed online.
The new hybrid model allows foundational concepts to be completed through CPI online modules while dedicating classroom time to hands-on practice, realistic scenarios, instructor feedback, and skill application.
This is not a reduction in learning expectations. It is a different method of delivery.
How long will the online modules take?
The CPI online modules take approximately 2 hours to complete.
Employees should plan dedicated, uninterrupted time to complete the modules.
Will I be given time to complete the modules?
Employees should work with their leader to identify dedicated time to complete the modules.
Employees are encouraged not to wait until the day before class to begin the modules.
Can I complete the modules from home?
Employees should follow departmental expectations regarding when and where training is completed. Questions regarding work time or completion outside scheduled work hours should be discussed with your leader.
Can I complete the modules in multiple sittings?
Yes.
Progress is saved as you move through the content. Employees may complete the modules over multiple sessions.
All modules must be completed at least 24 hours before the instructor-led training session.
When will I receive access to the modules?
Approximately two weeks before your scheduled instructor-led training session:
- You will receive an email from MU Health Care notifying you that your CPI modules are available.
- You will receive a separate email directly from CPI containing instructions and a link to access the modules.
What email address should I use?
Employees must use their “pawprint@health.missouri.edu” email address to access and complete CPI modules.
Using another email address may prevent successful completion and accurate tracking of training records.
When must modules be completed?
All modules must be completed at least 24 hours prior to the instructor-led training session.
What happens if I do not complete the modules before class?
Employees who have not completed all required modules at least 24 hours before class will not be permitted to attend the instructor-led session and will need to reschedule.
Why does registration close two weeks before class?
Registration closes two weeks before the instructor-led session so participants can be enrolled in the CPI learning platform and provided access to the required modules.
What if I need to cancel or reschedule?
Employees who need to cancel or reschedule after registration has closed (within two weeks of the instructor-led training session) must submit an AskHR ticket as soon as possible.
When submitting the ticket, include the date of the instructor-led training session you plan to attend.
Employees who have already accessed their CPI modules must complete an instructor-led training session within two weeks of their originally scheduled class date to remain eligible under their current CPI enrollment.
What happens if I open the modules but do not attend class?
Employees who access CPI modules must complete an instructor-led training session within two weeks of their originally scheduled class date.
Failure to complete the instructor-led training session within the required timeframe may require re-enrollment in the CPI learning platform and may result in additional CPI licensing fees being incurred by the department.
Why are there fees associated with the modules?
MU Health Care pays licensing fees to CPI for participant access to online learning content.
Once a participant accesses the CPI modules, a licensing fee is incurred.
For this reason, employees should only register for classes they intend to complete.
