Creating a certificate for a user not enrolled through Catalog

If a user is manually added to Canvas instead of self-enrolling, an admin can use the certificate preview to “create” a Catalog certificate for them.

⚠️Note: Doing this option does not save that individual's certificate in Catalog. Because the user is not enrolled through Catalog, their data will not be tracked through the Catalog Analytics. If you do not save a copy of the certificate you create using this workaround and the user requests another copy, you would have to create one again.

Creating a custom certificate preview

  1. Go to your Catalog website.
  2. Select Login at the top-right corner and login with your UM System account.
  3. Select your name.
  4. Select Admin.
  5. Go to the Listings tab and locate the course you need.
  6. Once in the Course Details, select the Certificate tab.
  7. Make a note if the template is currently on Default or Traditional.
  8. Select the radio button for Custom HTML/CSS (See Fig. 1).

  9. Scroll down the page until you see the Custom HTML/CSS box.
  10. Within the HTML editor, scroll down until you see the following items, and replace the content within the parenthesis with the information you want on the certificate (See Fig. 2).
Replace t.traditional_award_for with the student’s name.
Replace completion_date with the date that the student completed the course.

  11. ⚠️Note: Do not scroll down and select Save.
  12. Scroll up and select the blue eye icon on the bottom-right corner of the Custom HTML/CSS option (See Fig. 3).

  13. A new tab/window will generate a preview of the certificate.
  14. Download a copy of the certificate and save it on your computer. That will be the only copy of the certificate for the student (you can create it from scratch again if needed) (See Fig. 4).

  15. Repeat steps 8-12 for any additional certificates you need to create.
  16. Return to the templates and return the setting to either Default or Traditional as you noted earlier.
  17. Scroll down and select Save.
