The probationary period is designed to give the University an opportunity to determine whether the employee is suitable and qualified for the work for which the employee was hired and the decision as to the employee's suitability and qualifications is the sole responsibility of the University.
- Probationary period is typically six months.
- The official probationary period applies to new employees who are.75 FTE and above.
- Employees who are full-time and transfer internally to another full-time position will serve a one-month qualifying period.
- Employees who transfer internally from below a .75 FTE into a full-time position FTE will serve a probationary period.
- Employees must be notified that their probationary period is being extended before their six-month probationary period ends.
The Probationary Period Extension Toolkit is available and includes resources to guide leaders through this process.
If you are uncertain as to whether an extension of the probationary period is warranted, please contact Human Resources, Employee Relations, to discuss.
