Setting Up Facial Recognition (Windows Hello for Business)

Question

How do I set up Facial Recognition for Windows Hello for Business (WHFB)? (University Owned) 

Preface

Before you begin, ensure the following:

  • You are signed in with a Microsoft account or work/school account.
  • A Windows Hello-compatible camera is installed (IR camera required).
  • A Windows Hello PIN is already set up. Click HERE to view the Set Up Windows Hello PIN article. 
  • Your device has Windows 10 or Windows 11

Organizational polices (for work devices) allow Windows Hello.

Setting Up Facial Recognition

Click HERE for a video representation of the procedure. 

  1. On your Windows task bar Search field, enter Sign-in OptionsWindows task bar Search field with Sign-in options entered.
  2. Select the drop-down for Facial recognition (Windows Hello) and select Set up.Set up button circled.
  3. The Welcome to Windows Hello window will display. Select Get Started.Get started button circled.
  4. Enter your PIN and select OK.
    NOTE: If you have not yet set up your Windows Hello for Business PIN, it will prompt you to do so here.PIN field and OK button circled.
  5. Follow the prompts on the window for the biometric scan of your face.biometric face scan window.
  6. The All Set! window will display when you have finished.All set window displayed.

Optional: Improve Recognition Accuracy

If recognition is slow or inconsistent:

  1. On your Windows task bar Search field, enter Sign-in OptionsWindows task bar Search field with Sign-in options entered.
  2. Under Facial recognition (Windows Hello), select Improve recognition.Improve Recognition page shown.
  3. The Welcome to Windows Hello window will display. Select Get Started.Get started button circled.
  4. Enter your PIN and select OK.

  5. Follow the prompts on the window for the biometric scan of your face.biometric face scan window.
  6. The All Set! window will display when you have finished.
