To comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and to provide a fully inclusive learning experience, all online course materials must be digitally accessible. Yet many faculty do not know this or understand how to address potential accessibility barriers in their courses.
The Universal Design Online Content Inspection Tool, or UDOIT (pronounced "You Do It”) is a tool in Canvas designed to identify digital accessibility issues within your course and provide guidance to correct them. Doing so will help your course meet Quality Course Review requirements and create a learning environment that meets the needs of all students.
What items does UDOIT Scan?
UDOIT scans the following items in a Canvas course:
- Announcements
- Assignments
- Discussions
- Files
- Pages
- Syllabus
- Module URLS
Will UDOIT catch every accessibility issue in my Canvas course?
UDOIT will identify most accessibility concerns in content that is local to Canvas. See Creating, Understanding and Addressing your UDOIT Report for details.
It will also identify issues in Word, PowerPoint, and PDF documents. However, if there are accessibility issues with your files, you will not be able to resolve them within Canvas. You must download the file (or retrieve it from your hard drive or cloud storage), find and address the issues, and then upload the corrected file. Please see Using UDOIT to Address Accessibility Barriers in Course Files for guidance.
Moreover, UDOIT cannot reliable determine whether your video files have been captioned; you must check those separately.

Who can use it?
Anyone with a Teacher role can run and use UDOIT. Students may view the additional file formats.
How do I get started?
UDOIT is a part of Canvas, so there is no software to install. UDOIT will run in your web browser and on almost any Internet connection.
