Below are some typical portfolio use examples. We include what type of portfolio we recommend you use as well as any needed workarounds.
These are some basic use cases for portfolios, with a recommended portfolio type included. There are workarounds to make different portfolio types work for each recommendation. If you have questions, please schedule a 1-on-1 consultation to discuss how best to implement Canvas Portfolios.
Capstone course
Portfolio recommendation: Evaluation Portfolios
- An Evaluation Portfolio allows the instructor to curate specifically what students should be adding as evidence, assess whether or not their submission meets the specific needs of the evaluation, and leave private comments between the instructor and student.
- Because the evaluation is contained to a single course, the instructor can assign the evaluation portfolio to that class, ensuring all students are properly assigned to it.
- If additional reviewers need to see the portfolio, they can be shared via a direct link. Additional reviewers will not have access to the Learner Progress dashboard.
Program/accreditation review
Portfolio recommendation: Showcase Portfolios
- Because a program/accreditation review spans multiple courses, an evaluation portfolio cannot be used. Evaluation portfolios are tied to the single instructor who creates it, and would not teach all of the involved courses.
- Learners can be encouraged to create a showcase portfolio in an early course in the program, and add specific content to it during each of the courses in the program. While not as pre-structured as an evaluation portfolio, requirements can be communicated to students using a Canvas assignment.
- The portfolio can be reviewed throughout the students’ time in the program by having them submit a link to their portfolio in a Canvas assignment. These links can be shared with additional faculty members or outside reviewers.
Student work samples/resume
Portfolio recommendation: Showcase Portfolios
Students can independently create up to 100 showcase portfolios where they can keep track of their submitted coursework, extracurricular activities, and work experiences. They can then share these directly with external viewers.
