Getting started with Honorlock for students

Your instructor may require proctoring for online exams. If you are like a lot of students, you may experience test anxiety or feel nervous about the online testing process. If your instructor requires online exams, take some time to familiarize yourself with what you will need in order to successfully access and use the online proctoring system well ahead of your test dates. It is particularly important that you take the time to complete any practice test your instructor has enabled to ensure you are familiar with the testing process and that your computer is compatible with the testing system.
 

Most courses that require online proctoring will use Honorlock. Honorlock is a remote proctoring system that uses advanced machine learning and facial detection technology to ensure test integrity. The program is optimized to protect your security and privacy while providing a proctored environment to replace classroom testing. You'll take your exam on your own computer via the internet; exam sessions will be recorded and a live “pop-in” Honorlock proctor may interact with you if warranted. Recordings will be made available to your instructor, who can review them as needed.

What will I need to use Honorlock?

  • A desktop, laptop, or Chromebook (no phones, iPads or tablets) using the most current version of the Chrome browser that meets the system requirements listed here.
  • A working webcam, microphone, and speakers.
  • A current government or school issued ID. The name on your photo ID must match your Canvas display name. You can run a pre-check on your ID here.
  • The Honorlock Chrome extension. This web extension is installed within Chrome and monitors your Chrome web browser. You can remove the Honorlock Chrome extension as soon as your exam is submitted.

    Note: You will need a connection speed of at least 1.5Mbps down, and 750 Kbps up. If your computer and connection do not meet the minimum speed requirement, you will need to either turn off other devices on the network that might be consuming bandwidth or use a different network (usually at a different location). In some cases, restarting your router may help, as may a wired, Ethernet connection. Because there are other factors (free memory, number of processes or programs running on the computer) that could also affect speed, we recommend you close all non-essential applications and programs, then fully restart your computer before taking the exam. If after trying all of these options you are still unable to connect, please use the Honorlock support chat for further assistance and notify your instructor that you are having technical issues.
