There are two options for captioning audio/video slides and comments in VoiceThread. For more information on captioning, including how to edit captions, please see VoiceThread's closed captioning documentation.
Note: Instructors should also add ALT text to their VoiceThread slides.
Automated Captioning via VoiceThread
All audio/video in VoiceThread slides and comments are automatically machine captioned. Automated captions are viewed by turning on the closed captioning display within a VoiceThread. Captions should appear on your VoiceThread within 10–15 minutes of saving the audio/video. The automated captions are not ADA-compliant without editing by the content specialist to ensure accuracy. Currently, automated captions are only available in English. If English is not detected, the slide/comment will not be captioned.
3PlayMedia professional captioning (recommended for ADA compliance)
3PlayMedia captioning is required and should be used when a student needs it as an ADA accommodation. If your student has an accommodation and needs captioning through 3PlayMedia, please contact your campus disability center.
The MU disability office pays for required captions. Captions from other campuses must be paid for by the applicable department.
Manual professional captioning by 3PlayMedia should be mostly accurate, with minimal editing needed, primarily for specialized terms. If you use 3PlayMedia, the new manual captions will override any previously existing automated VoiceThread captions. Times vary, but 3PlayMedia captions may take up to a couple of days to process.
Please direct any questions about captioning to at@umsystem.edu.
