New! VoiceThread stacked assignments allow commenting on presentations for a grade

Beginning Fall 2025, VoiceThread has enabled the ability to “stack” an assignment. Stacking an assignment requires that students add comments to a prior VoiceThread assessment, such as a presentation a classmate previously submitted. In the past, instructors were able to allow students to view and comment on classmates' submissions in the Student Gallery, but now they can require that students comment on those submissions for a grade. VoiceThread tracks these comments and holds a space to enter a grade. This update is particularly useful for Assessing student presentations with VoiceThread assignments.
Note: Only presentations that the students have left comments on will show up in the Student Gallery.

What types of assignments can be stacked?

All stacked assignments at this point are "comment" type assignments. You can require students to comment on:

  • VoiceThreads that their classmates submitted in a previous "create" assignment

  • A VoiceThread from a previous "comment" assignment (for example, reply to another student's original comment)

  • A VoiceThread from a previous "watch" assignment

How do you create a stacked assignment?

Just build a "comment" assignment like you normally would. When you get to the step where you decide what students need to comment on, you'll see the option to choose a previous assignment. Just select the assignment you want students to interact with, and then finish setting up the assignment as you normally would.
