Adding URL's to the Canvas navigation menu with the Redirect Tool (External Apps)

Canvas does not support the option to include additional links in the course navigation menu. To supplement this, an app called “Redirect” can be installed via the Apps page in a course. This tool will allow an instructor to create new links in the course navigation menu. Please see the instructions below on installing and using the Redirect tool.

NOTE: The recommendation is to use this tool sparingly, as the best practice for course design is to keep the Course Menu as simple as possible.

Enabling Redirect Tool in your course

1. Open Canvas and select the course the Redirect link needs to be added.
2. Once the course is open, select Settings in the Course Navigation menu, see Fig. 1.

3. Along the top of the Course Details page, select Apps; see Fig. 2.

4. Locate the Redirect app icon or use the search option. Once located, select the app image to open it, then choose the Add App option, see Fig. 3.

5. In the Add App text box enter the name you want to display and the URL. Use the checkbox options to select the Course Navigation box and choose Add App to finalize and Save. (See Fig. 4). Note: Account Navigation and User Navigation options are for administrator purposes and will not work for instructor purposes.

6. The new link should now appear in the Course Navigation menu for access.
7. Repeat steps 3-5 to add new links in the Course Navigation menu.

Hiding or Removing Redirect Links

Instructors cannot delete or edit any Redirect links once made. However, if a link is no longer needed, it can be hidden from the Course Navigation menu so that it is not visible to students.

1. Open Canvas and select the course in which you want to hide the Redirect link.
2. Once in the course, select Settings in the Course Navigation Menu.
3. Select the Navigation tab.
4. Find the Redirect link(s) that you would like to hide, select the text, and “drag and drop” it to the lower section labeled Drag items here to hide them from students.
5. Select Save to finalize the change.
