EdSights Risk Levels

EdSights (our partner that powers Roary) uses a proprietary risk model informed by millions of anonymized student responses and how these responses correlate to persistence outcomes. Risk Levels for each student range from "Low" to "High" and are calculated on a curve. As students respond to Roary’s proactive campaigns, they will be assigned an Overall Risk Level and a Risk Level by Category based on the nature and severity of their response in comparison to other active students at Mizzou.

  • Risk Levels are based solely on data from students – their responses to Roary’s proactive check-ins. They do not take into account factors about students such as grades, attendance, etc.
  • Risk Levels are cumulative and update as students respond to new proactive campaigns and as the population of active peers evolves.
  • Risk Levels are not intended to drive additional direct student outreach.
  • If a student does not have a Risk Level (“N/A”) in MU Connect in a specific category, it means they have not responded to any Roary’s proactive campaigns for that category in the 12-month cycle.
  • Important: Students are never informed of Risk Level or Risk Category language and are intended solely for student success professionals. Like advising groups, these levels are intended to inform support and conversation.

MU Connect access to attributes is based on educational need-to-know and security-based roles. If you have access to student attributes, they are viewable in the Student Folder and available to use as an Advanced Search criteria. Each Risk Level has one of the following specific value criteria: Low_Risk, Medium_Risk, High_Risk, or Not_Applicable.

Risk Category What it reflects
EdSights_Academic_Risk Students’ perceptions of their academic experience (e.g., interest in courses, confidence in major, perceived relevance of the material).
EdSights_Engagement_Risk How connected students feel to the institution, including a sense of belonging, peer connection, and perceived support systems.
EdSights_Financial_Risk Perceived financial stressors that may not be immediately visible to staff, such as food or housing insecurity, overall financial stress, or pressure of balancing work and academics.
EdSights_Wellness_Risk Students’ emotional and physical well-being, critical factors that directly impact their ability to thrive in a college environment.
EdSights_Overall_Risk A cumulative summary of student sentiment across all four categories, relative to active students at the same institution.
What Risk Levels ARE: What Risk Levels ARE NOT:
  • A signal of real-time student sentiment
  • A source of additional context
  • A complement to academic and advising data
  • A diagnosis
  • A script for outreach
  • Information to share directly with students
  • A standalone trigger for staff intervention
  • An absolute prediction of who will drop out

Example uses for Risk Level Attributes using MU Connect Advanced Search criteria

  • Prioritize outreach to or support within caseloads or cohorts by identifying students who have vocalized challenges.
    • I.e., EdSights Financial Risk – High Risk + workshop opportunities
  • Help provide students with holistic support by pairing this student sentiment data with academic records, attendance, and staff/faculty observations or flags.
    • I.e., EdSights Academic Risk – High Risk + early alert flags
  • Prepare for student meetings with added context about how a student may be feeling. Guide student conversations using open‑ended, non‑directive questions (e.g., “How are things going this term?”)
