Adding a Hypothesis assignment

If you will be using Hypothesis with a PDF, you need to upload the file to Canvas Files before completing the steps below.

Adding a Hypothesis Assignment

  1. From your Canvas site, select Assignments in the navigation menu.
  2. Select +Assignment at the top of the page.
  3. Enter the assignment's name, description (optional) and points possible.
  4. In the Submission Type drop-down menu, select External Tool.
  5. Select Find and locate Hypothesis in the list. 
  6. Select Hypothesis. A pop-up window will appear (See Fig. 1).

  7. Select one of the links below for instructions on adding the type of document you will use:

Select PDF from Canvas

  1. On the Link Resource from External Tool screen, choose Select PDF from Canvas.
  2. You will see a list of files in your Canvas Files directory. Select the title of the file you want to use and choose Select. You will return to the Configure External Tool window (See Fig. 2).

  3. Choose Select on the bottom of the pop-up window.
  4. Finish entering the additional assignment information.
  5. Select Save or Save & Publish.
  6. The Hypothesis-enabled Assignment Item will be listed on the Assignments page. When your students select the Assignment, the webpage or document will open with Hypothesis enabled and scoped to your class enrollments.

Enter URL of web page or PDF

  1. On the Link Resource from External Tool screen, select Enter URL of webpage or PDF.
  2. Enter or paste the URL of the site in the URL text field (See Fig. 3).

    NOTE: The link must be publicly viewable (i.e., not behind a login or paywall).
  3. Select Submit .
  4. Choose Select on the bottom of the pop-up window.
  5. Finish entering the additional assignment information.
  6. Select Save or Save & Publish.
  7. The Hypothesis-enabled Assignment Item will be listed on the Assignments page. When your students select the Assignment, the webpage or document will open with Hypothesis enabled and scoped to your class enrollments.
