If you will be using Hypothesis with a PDF, you need to upload the file to Canvas Files before completing the steps below.
Adding a Hypothesis Assignment
- From your Canvas site, select Assignments in the navigation menu.
- Select +Assignment at the top of the page.
- Enter the assignment's name, description (optional) and points possible.
- In the Submission Type drop-down menu, select External Tool.
- Select Find and locate Hypothesis 1.3 in the list.
- Select Hypothesis 1.3. A pop-up window will appear (See Fig. 1). Please note that Hypothes.is is not integrated with OneDrive at UM System, so that option is not available for use in an assignment.

- Select one of the links below for instructions for your particular option:
- On the Link Resource from External Tool screen, select URL.
- Enter or paste the URL of the site in the URL text field (See Fig. 2).

NOTE: The link must be publicly viewable (i.e., not behind a login or paywall).
- Select Submit.
- Choose Select on the bottom of the pop-up window.
- Finish entering the additional assignment information.
- Select Save or Save & Publish.
- The Hypothesis-enabled Assignment Item will be listed on the Assignments page. When your students select the Assignment, the webpage or document will open with Hypothesis enabled and scoped to your class enrollments.
- On the Link Resource from External Tool screen, choose Canvas File.
- You will see a list of files in your Canvas Files directory. Select the title of the file you want to use and choose Select. You will return to the Configure External Tool window (See Fig. 3).

- Choose Select on the bottom of the pop-up window.
- Finish entering the additional assignment information.
- Select Save or Save & Publish.
- The Hypothesis-enabled Assignment Item will be listed on the Assignments page. When your students select the Assignment, the document will open with Hypothesis enabled and scoped to your class enrollments.
- On the Link Resource from External Tool screen, choose Canvas Page.
- You will see a list of pages in your Canvas site. Select the title of the page you want to use and choose Select. You will return to the Configure External Tool window (See Fig. 4).

- Choose Select on the bottom of the pop-up window.
- Finish entering the additional assignment information.
- Select Save or Save & Publish.
- The Hypothesis-enabled Assignment Item will be listed on the Assignments page. When your students select the Assignment, the page will open with Hypothesis enabled and scoped to your class enrollments.
Select PDF from Google Drive
- On the Link Resource from External Tool screen, choose Google Drive.
- You will be prompted to choose a Google account; select the account you wish to use. The first time you select this account, you will be asked to confirm that you trust Hypothesis LMS app: press Continue.
- You will then choose the file from your Google Drive account for students to annotate. Select the file and choose Select. You will return to the Configure External Tool window (See Fig. 5).

- Choose Select on the bottom of the pop-up window.
- Finish entering the additional assignment information.
- Select Save or Save & Publish.
- The Hypothesis-enabled Assignment Item will be listed on the Assignments page. When your students select the Assignment, the page will open with Hypothesis enabled and scoped to your class enrollments.
Select PDF from JSTOR
- On the Link Resource from External Tool screen, choose JSTOR.
- Paste in the JSTOR link you would like to use, and select Accept and Continue (see Fig. 6).

- Select your preferred assignment settings and select Continue (see Fig. 7).

- Choose Select on the bottom of the pop-up window.
- Finish entering the additional assignment information.
- Select Save or Save & Publish.
- The Hypothesis-enabled Assignment Item will be listed on the Assignments page. When your students select the Assignment, the page will open with Hypothesis enabled and scoped to your class enrollments.
Select texts and ebooks from VitalSource
- On the Link Resource from External Tool screen, choose VitalSource.
- Paste in the link or ISBN for the VitalSource resource you would like to use, and select Select book (see Fig. 8).

- Select your preferred assignment settings and select Continue.
- Choose Select on the bottom of the pop-up window.
- Finish entering the additional assignment information.
- Select Save or Save & Publish.
- The Hypothesis-enabled Assignment Item will be listed on the Assignments page. When your students select the Assignment, the page will open with Hypothesis enabled and scoped to your class enrollments.
Enter URL of a YouTube video
- On the Link Resource from External Tool screen, choose YouTube.
- Paste in the link for the YouTube video you would like to use, and wait for the video's details to populate in the YouTube selector (see Fig. 9).

- Once the YouTube video has populated in the selector, select Continue (see Fig. 10).

- Select your preferred assignment details and select Continue.
- Choose Select on the bottom of the pop-up window.
- Finish entering the additional assignment information.
- Select Save or Save & Publish.
- The Hypothesis-enabled Assignment Item will be listed on the Assignments page. When your students select the Assignment, the page will open with Hypothesis enabled and scoped to your class enrollments.
