Viewing and restoring archived Panopto videos

Summary

A guide for how to view and restore archived Panopto videos.

Beginning June 1, 2026, videos archived in accordance with our retention policy will be permanently deleted. 

  1. Go to Panopto and sign in.
  2. From the left navigation panel, select System (see Fig. 1).
  3. Select Archive.

  4. You will see a list of all videos currently archived under your account. 
  5. Hover over the video and select the Restore from Archive icon (see Fig. 2).

  6. The restore process will begin. 
    ⚠️Note: Shorter and newly archived videos might be restored within a few hours. Longer or older videos may take up to 72 hours to restore.
  7. You will receive an notification when a video is restored and ready to view.

How to prevent a video from being archived

Any view (by you or your viewers) resets the 18‑month inactivity timer.

  • Periodically play the video (even briefly).
  • Share the video with your students or embed the video in Canvas, which will generate viewing activity.
  • Reuse the recording in a current or upcoming course.
