Ally provides a way for students to request alternative file formats from within Canvas.
Accessing Alternative Formats
- In your Canvas course, select the A icon with an arrow next to it to the left of the filename (see Fig. 1).

- Once the button has been selected, you will see a menu of different alternative format options appear (see Fig. 2).

- Select the alternative format of your choice and select Download.
- The selected alternative format of the file will either download to your computer or display within Canvas. Some file types may take some time to generate, depending on the original document size.
Types of Alternative Formats
Ally generates alternative formats for the following file types:
- PDF files
- Microsoft Word files
- Microsoft PowerPoint files
- OpenOffice/LibreOffice files
- Uploaded HTML files
The kinds of alternative formats that can be generated are:
- OCR'ed version of scanned documents
- Tagged PDF (for Word, PowerPoint, and OpenOffice/LibreOffice files)
- Immersive Reader (operates within Canvas only)
- Mobile-friendly HTML
- Audio
- ePub
- Electronic Braille
- Beeline Reader
- Translated versions (this option is not available at UM System)
