Respondus LockDown Browser Troubleshooting Tips for Students

Body

Students need to download and install the Respondus LockDown Browser (LDB) on their devices before taking an exam that requires the LDB. Here are troubleshooting tips to help you get started and avoid common issues.

If you are prompted to install the LockDown Browser

Follow the instructions below to install the LDB if you have not already done that.

Personal computer users (Windows and Mac)

Make sure you are using the UMsystem-specific link to download the application. The LDB is customized for each institution and using the wrong installation file will prevent access to your exams.

After downloading the installation file, ensure that you open the file and complete the installation process. See the instructions for both Windows and Mac computers.

IMPORTANT: If you have installed the correct application but are still getting this prompt, that means you are using a normal browser such as Firefox, Chrome, Internet Explorer or Safari. To take LDB required exams, you would need to close those browsers and open the LDB to login to Canvas and navigate to the exam within the LDB.

iPad Users

You can use an iPad with the LockDown Browser app to access exams that require the LDB. To do so, please follow the step-by-step instructions for using the LDB with an iPad. The first time the app is used, you will be prompted to set up the configuration and choose your institution. Search for and then choose University of Missouri System. Once the setup is complete, you will be directed to the Canvas login page. Log in with your university credentials, navigate to the course and quiz, and begin your exam.

Chromebook Users

An extension is required for using the LDB on Chromebooks. Read the instructions carefully before getting started.

Other Common Issues

Check if your LDB is the latest version. Updating the LDB to the latest version could help to avoid technical issues.

Restart your device and close other applications. Although the LDB will prompt you to close certain software such as Zoom and screen capturing tools, it is a good practice to exit from all running programs before launching the LDB. In some cases you may need to disable 3rd party firewall/antivirus software as well.

Contact your instructor if you see an error such as “There is a problem with the LockDown Browser settings for this exam”.

Connect to a different Internet network when possible.

Use a lab computer on campus. If none of your personal devices work, contact your campus general IT support for a list of student computer labs that are installed with the LDB software.
