Body
As of April 10, 2025, the Canvas integration with Pearson was updated to facilitate codeless access to Pearson content via the VitalSource Materials app. If you have already paired your Pearson course with Canvas for Summer or Fall 2025, please contact us at teachingtools@umsystem.edu.
Notes:
- Before you attempt to pair and set up your Pearson materials, the AutoAccess Team must have received and added your Pearson adoption to their database.
- If you are copying a previous course in Canvas, do that first. If it contains any Pearson links you will be using, do not open any of them.
Follow these two-part instructions to set up your Pearson courseware.
Part 1: Ensure VitalSource is enabled in your Canvas course site
- Log in to Canvas and go to your course site.
- Select Settings from the course navigation menu.
- Select the Navigation tab.
- Select the three dots for VS Materials and choose Enable (See Fig. 1).

Figure 1: VS Materials in the navigation tab
- If the old Access Pearson or MyLab/Mastering access items are available in your course navigation, please disable them from this same area.
- Scroll down to the bottom of the page and select Save.
- Select the VS Material link from your course navigation.
- You should see your textbook with Launch Courseware at the bottom (See Fig. 2). If you do not see the button, email autoaccessfaculty@umsystem.edu and CC your Pearson sales rep.
- Select Launch Courseware.

Part 2: Linking your Pearson course (MyLab/Mastering/Revel) to Canvas
After you have checked your VS Material link, you are ready to link your Pearson Course (MyLab/Mastering/Revel) to Canvas. We recommend using Chrome as your browser, and make sure you allow pop-ups.
- After selecting Launch Courseware in the previous step, you should be given a screen with your textbook and the links to set it up.
- Enter a course name, description and dates.
- Mark it as a Student-use Course.
- Add or copy materials into your Canvas course.
- Add your MyLab or Mastering assignments and course tools, such as Grades or eText (also called eTextbook) to your Canvas course. For instructions on how to do this, watch this video from Pearson.
- Copy a previous MyLab or Mastering course when setting up the new VS Materials link, so you will retain any MyLab or Mastering assignments you typically copy from term to term. For questions about this process, see the help information below.
