How do I authenticate using passkey on the Microsoft Authenticator app?

Preface

What you need before you start:

  • Must be connected to the internet.
  • Microsoft Authenticator App with Passkey already created.
  • If logging into a device that is not the device with the Authenticator App you must:
    • Have Bluetooth enabled on your device with Microsoft Authenticator.

Have Bluetooth enabled on the device you are trying to log into.

Sign In on a Different Device Using a Microsoft Authenticator Passkey:

If you created a passkey in Microsoft Authenticator on your phone, you can use it to sign in on another device (such as a laptop, classroom PC, or shared workstation) without entering a password. This is called cross-device passkey sign-in

  1. Log into a site that has the university SSO log in screen.Sign in page. Enter password page.
  2. When prompted with a sign-in method, choose a passkey. For this example we will select iPhone, iPad, or Android device.iPhone, iPad, or Android device option circled.
  3. A QR code will display.QR Code displayed.
  4. Open the camera app on your phone and select the link when scanning the QR code. You may also select the Scan QR code button on the bottom of the Microsoft Authenticator app. Sign in with passkey button circled on camera app.  Scan QR code button circled. Scan QR code display.
  5. A message will display, select the Use Passkey button.Use Passkey button circled.
  6. Another message will display, select the Continue button.Continue button circled.
  7. The Microsoft Authenticator app will prompt user verification using biometrics (face or fingerprint) or PIN. It will display a checkmark symbol if accepted.Face ID check mark symbol.
  8. You should be successfully logged in.
