How to do I update my Password ?
Answer
Follow the steps below to update your student password.
Note: If you have not set up your Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) through the University and Microsoft, you will be prompted for more information. See this knowledge article for step-by-step instructions, Microsoft 365: Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) Setup.
- Open a web browser, and go to passwordreset.microsoftonline.com.
- In the Email or User name box, type your email address, e.g., username@umsystem.edu.
- Type the characters you see in the CAPTCHA area into the text box below (the characters are not case sensitive).
- Click Next.

- You will be prompted to choose a method of verification (text, call, or enter a code from your Authenticator app).
Note: The standard is text or phone. Scroll down to see separate instructions for each method, Text, Phone, and Authenticator app.
Text:
- If you choose Text my mobile phone, type your 10 digit phone number in the box. You will then receive a text message with a verification code that you can use to reset your password.
Note: If you have an international number, enter it in the format of +CountryCode Phone Number (there is a space between the +country code and phone number).

Note: If you receive an error message that you are not able to reset your password because you have not registered for password reset, you will need to contact us at 573-882-5000 to verify your identity to update your phone number to continue. If you cannot call us, we can schedule a Zoom meeting to verify your identity.
- Type the verification code that you received in the text message.
- Click Next and create your new password.

Phone:
- If you selected Call my mobile phone, the system will call your phone. Answer and then follow the instructions of the automated message to verify the call.
- Once you verify with the code, you are ready to create your new password and then confirm it.

Authenticator App
Once you verify the code with the Authenticator app, create your new password and then confirm it.
The following are the requirements to create a password:
It must be at least eight (8) characters long
It must contain at least one (1) upper case letter
It must contain at least one (1) lower case letter
It must contain at least one (1) special character (examples: &, *, $, etc.)
It cannot contain your name or your username
It cannot contain common words from a dictionary
It cannot be the same as any of your previous twenty-four (24) passwords used for the University
