How to connect to VPN using Mac

How do I connect to VPN using a Macintosh workstation?

Answer

Requirements

Make sure you are registered with valid contact information to use the service.

NOTE: Most university resources do not require VPN for access. For example: email, Box, PeopleSoft, Zoom, Canvas, etc.

Installation

NOTE: AnyConnect version 4.4 requires macOS 10.9.5 or later.

  1. Go to https://anyconnect.missouri.edu.
  2. For GROUP choose **Generic.
  3. Enter your university email address in the Microsoft window that appears.NOTE: This must be the full email. (i.e. username@umsystem.edu)
  4. In the Password field type your password.
  5. Click the sign in button.
  6. Approve your sign in via your preferred method (text message, authenticator app, etc.) If you have chosen to receive a text you will enter the code sent to you then click verify to submit.**Note: if you would like to use a different method than the one automatically chosen click the link “Sign in another way” to choose a secondary method of verification.
  7. Click the blue “Download for MacOS” button to begin downloading the installer
  8. Open the Downloads folder.
  9. Open anyconnect-macosx-[...].dmg. A disk named AnyConnect is shown in Finder.
  10. Open anyconnect-macosx-[...].pkg.
  11. Click Continue.
  12. Click Continue after reading the license agreement.
  13. Click Agree.
  14. Click Install.
  15. Type your Mac administrator Username and Password.
  16. Click Install Software.
  17. Click Close.
  18. Drag the AnyConnect disk to the Trash to eject it.

Connecting

  1. From Finder, open Applications / Cisco / Cisco Secure Client.
  2. In the Ready to connect field, type vpn.missouri.edu.
  3. Click the Connect button.
  4. In the Group field, choose:
    - For Students, choose **Generic.
    - For Faculty/Staff, choose *Employee.
  5. Enter your university email address in the Microsoft window that appears.
    NOTE: This must be the full email. (i.e. username@umsystem.edu)
  6. In the Password field type your password.
  7. Click the sign in button.
  8. Approve your sign in via your preferred method (text message, authenticator app, etc.)
    If you have chosen to receive a text you will enter the code sent to you then click verify to submit.

  9. Once connected, the AnyConnect client is minimized to the Dock

Disconnecting

  1. Right click on the icon in the dock or the menu bar
  2. Choose disconnect from the menu options
  3. Alternatively:
    From Finder, open Applications / Cisco / Cisco Secure Client.
    Click Disconnect.
