Freedom Scientific regularly releases JAWS updates to improve functionality, add features, and ensure compatibility with the latest software and operating systems. Below are key points about the JAWS release cycle:

  • Regular Updates: JAWS typically releases updates every eight weeks, which may include new features, bug fixes, and improvements. Installing a regular update will replace the current version and no additional license is required.
  • New Version Release: New versions are released in October, featuring new enhancements and features. An upgrade license is required for the new version.

Checking the Number of Remaining Upgrades in JAWS

To check how many upgrades are remaining on your JAWS license, follow these steps:

  1. Open the JAWS menu.
  2. Navigate to and select Help.
  3. From the Help menu, choose About JAWS.

This will display the number of remaining upgrades associated with your license.

How to Check the Version of JAWS You Are Using

  1. Press INSERT + J, then press Down Arrow. 
  2. You will hear a sequence of numbers: a year, followed by a day, and then a month. 

For example: 2025.2410.106.

  • 2025 is the release year
  • 24.10 represents the day (October 24).

This means the version was released on October 24, 2025.

Note: When installing the new version, the current version of JAWS remains licensed and available for use. It is recommended to keep the current version installed on your computer as a “backup version”.

Automatic Update Notifications

JAWS automatically notifies users of available software update. This feature is enabled by default and can be managed in the Basics section in the Options menu.

How to Update JAWS

Note: You must be connected to the Internet to check for and download updates.

  1. Check for Updates:
    • Open JAWS.
    • Press ALT+H to open the Help menu, then select Check for Updates. JAWS will then search for available updates.
  2. Select Updates:
    • If updates are available, a list will appear. Use the arrow keys to navigate the list and the spacebar to select the updates you want to install.
  3. Install Updates:
    • Choose the "Install" button to download and install the selected updates. A restart may be required after installation.

Important Notes

  • Administrator access: You may need to provide the Administrator credentials used during your system’s initial set up.
  • Firewall Settings: Ensure that your firewall allows JAWS to access the internet, and grant access to FSAutoUpdate.exe if necessary.
