Update Password

Question

How to do I update my Password?

Answer

Follow the steps below to update your MU account password.

Note: If you have not set up your Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) through the University and Microsoft, you will be prompted for more information. See this knowledge article for step-by-step instructions, Microsoft 365: Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) Setup.

1. Open a web browser, and go to passwordreset.microsoftonline.com.
2. In the Email or User name box, type your umsystem email address, e.g., username@umsystem.edu.
3. If prompted, type the characters you see in the CAPTCHA area into the text box below (the characters are not case sensitive).
4. Click Next.

A number 2 is located next to a space where a user has typed in their umsystem.edu email address, a number 3 is located next to a space where a user has entered the Captcha letters on the screen, a number 4 is located next to a 'Next' button

5. You will be prompted to choose a method of verification (text, call, or enter a code from your Authenticator app).

Note: The default authentication method is text or phone. Scroll down to see separate instructions for each method, Text, Phone, and Authenticator app.

Note: If you receive an error stating that you cannot reset your password because you have not registered for password reset, this means you do not have sufficient multi-factor authentication methods set up yet. IT can assist you with adding a method, but we will first need to verify your identity via government-issued photo ID. Contact the Help Desk at 573-882-5000 to verify your identity and update your authentication methods. If you cannot call, a Zoom meeting can be scheduled to verify your identity. You may also visit in-person to verify, at the TigerTech Service Desk.
