Is my RDE storage backed up?
RDE storage is not backed up by default to a secondary storage location. We do have local snapshots enabled for Pixstor and VAST shares. For Pixstor, local snapshots are generated daily after midnight and kept for a 10-day rotation. This means files created and removed or modified prior to the snap running on the previous day, going back 10 days, can potentially be recovered. Files created and deleted on the same day, or changes and deletions noticed after 10 days cannot be recovered via snapshot recovery.
With VAST, we apply a snapshot policy where daily snapshots run each morning, and 7 daily and 4 monthly snaps are retained. From these snaps a file or entire directories could potentially be recovered if a user were to discover they inadvertently deleted data covered within the timeframe of the snaps, or 4 weeks. Similar to Pixstor, if a file is written and deleted within the same day, prior to the snap running it would not be recovered since it would not have had time to have a snapshot generated. While snapshots are critical for file recovery, they should not be considered a backup since they reside on the same storage platform.
We have the option to back up your share to another platform for an additional charge that matches the general storage allocation charge to cover the hardware and backup software licensing cost. If interested please email us at itrss@missouri.edu and a ticket will be generated for review.
