How-To: Access Hellbender from Off Campus

How Do I Access Hellbender from Off Campus?

Certain methods for accessing Hellbender, such as SSH with a password, will not normally work when off the MU campus network. Listed here are various methods which can be used to access some of the cluster’s endpoints.

Methods to Access Hellbender from Off Campus

Method 1 - VPN: If you have an MU campus VPN set up you should be able to log into Hellbender normally across all endpoints. Before trying to access the cluster, ensure your VPN (most likely Cisco Secure Client in your system tray) is running and connected.

Method 2 – Open OnDemand: Open OnDemand allows access to the cluster via your web browser from any network. Landing pages for both the research and class Open OnDemand portals are here:

 - https://ondemand.rnet.missouri.edu/ (Research)
 - https://hb-classes.missouri.edu/ (Classes)

For additional guidance see accessing and using Open OnDemand.

Method 3 – Public Authentication SSH Key: If you do not have VPN access and still wish to access Hellbender via SSH you still can with public key authentication. If you would like your SSH key added email the public key to itrss@missouri.edu. After setting up your client to use your key, you still use the host hellbender-login.rnet.missouri.edu to connect, however now without need for using the VPN.

For additional guidance see How To Generate a Public Authentication SSH Key.
