New Notification Process for Restarts on Dell Computers

This article explains a new notification process on Dell computers that gives you more control over driver updates and restarts. This is separate from Windows updates and application updates (e.g., Adobe, Zoom, etc.).

Beginning on 04/30/2026, MU Dell computers with outdated drivers will begin seeing the following pop-up that asks you to either Install updates or choose Later:

Screenshot of notification with text "Mizzou MU Division of Information Technology Updates Available Dell Command Update has found new driver or firmware updates for your computer. Would you like to install them now? The process could take several minutes and may require a reboot after installation. If a reboot is needed, a message will appear and 30 seconds later the computer will automatically reboot, so please save any work before clicking the Install Now button. This box will not go away until you respond. Clicking Later will snooze the pop-up window for a time (generally about a day). If you would like to manually check for and install Dell driver updates at a time of your choosing, the Dell Command Update program should appear in the Start menu on your computer.

Important note: Before you click Install Now, be prepared for your computer to restart by saving any draft emails, unsaved documents, etc.

We recommend not using your computer during the update process. The amount of time it takes to install the updates will vary, but it can take several minutes. A restart won’t always be needed, but if so, you will get a 30-second warning:

A restart will happen within 30 seconds of this window popping up, but you can click Restart Now to do so immediately. Important note: Even if you do not click Restart Now, your computer will restart in 30 seconds.

If no restart is needed, you will see a confirmation that updates were installed:
