Getting Started with Lucid Assignments

This article explains how to use Lucid's interactive whiteboard tools in Canvas for active learning. It explains how to create individual assignments where students work independently on Lucid boards and submit them for grading as well as collaborative activities where students can edit shared Lucid documents embedded in Canvas for group work.

Individual assignments with Lucid

An assignment with the Lucid integration enabled allows students to work independently on a Lucid document and submit a copy of their work for grading.

To set up a Canvas assignment with Lucid create a new assignment and then choose “Lucid” as the assignment submission type, figure 1.

This type of Lucid assignment allows students to open and edit a copy of the attached Lucid board. When students submit their assignment, a PDF version of the document is exported and displayed in the Canvas SpeedGrader. Students will not have access to or be able to see peer's work. Any edits students make after submitting the assignment will not be visible unless they resubmit.

Peer Activities with Lucid

The Lucid integration allows for students to collaboratively edit Lucid documents that are embedded into Canvas. 

Creating a collaborative Lucid activity

1. In the Canvas course, create a new Canvas page.
2. In the Rich Content Edit tool bar, select the Apps drop-down arrow. Select the Lucid icon titled "Insert Whiteboard or Diagram" or View All to locate the Lucid icon/title, figure 2.

3. Once selected the Lucid integration will launch and guide you to select or create a new Lucid document for the activity.

⚠️Note: Ensure "Edit" access settings are used so that users are able to edit, view, and leave comments appropriately.

⚠️Note: If you want students to work in Canvas groups, this process is different from using the Lucid integration in the Rich Content Editor (RCE) and from the submission type in assignments.
