Adding a test student to your Canvas course

Instructors may use the Canvas Request System, in combination with an Alternative Login, to add a test student to their Canvas course sites.  Though the integrated Student View in Canvas allows instructors to test many aspects of their course, test students allow for testing with the integrated external tools available such as VoiceThread or Turnitin. 

Steps

  1. Create an Alternative Login.
  2. Associate your Alternative Login with your normal Canvas login using the Canvas Request System (CRS).
  3. Wait approximately 48 hours for the information to move through the system.
  4. Enroll the Alternative Login into your Canvas course with student access using the Canvas Request System.

Creating an Alternative Login

Please follow the instructions on this page to create, activate and verify your Alternative Login.

Associate your Alternative Login

  1. Go to the Canvas Request System and login with your username and password.
  2. Select Test Student Accounts from the main navigation menu.
  3. Then, select Associate your Alternative Login (See Fig. 1).

  4. Enter your Alternative Login email address and then check your email for the verification email (See Fig. 2).
    Note: You may only have one test student account associated with your Canvas account.
    Note: If you don't see the email please check your junk
    text box for entering your Alternative Login email address

  5. Select Click here to verify your email address (See Fig. 3).

  6. Remember to wait about 48 hours for this new account to be recognized by the CRS.
  7. Login to the Canvas request system with your username and password.
  8. View the confirmation message (See Fig. 4).

  9. Select Test Student Accounts from the main navigation menu.
  10. Then, select Enroll Test Student (See, Fig. 1).
  11. Select the term that your course is in (ex. FS2022).
  12. Select Enroll Test Student next to the course in which you want to enroll the test student (See Fig. 5).

  13. View your summary of changes and select Submit to finalize (See Fig. 6).

  14. View your confirmation (See Fig. 7). The CRS will process the request within 24 hours.

Alternative Login Canvas accounts may be used for non-university affiliated, external users to gain access to Canvas with all levels of access, except for Teacher.
