Making Quizzes accessible in Canvas

Body

There are multiple items you should consider when creating an ADA accessible quiz in Canvas.

  • If you have set a time limit on your quiz, you can grant access for extra time. If the student hasn't taken the quiz, the extra time will be added to the student's initial attempt and additional attempts. Instructions on how to do this are below.
  • Add alt text and descriptions to your quiz (and other) images in Canvas. See instructions on how to do that are at this link.
  • Include table header rows on tables in your quiz questions. Make the tables simple, rather than complex. Instructions on how to do that are below. Detailed information can be found at this link.
  • Do not use Hot Spot question types as these are not ADA accessible.

Making an accessible table

A simple table here means means that there is a maximum of one header row and one header column where a header column specifies the type of information in the column. In addition, there are no merged cells within a simple table. Below are examples of simple and complex tables. Because screen readers present information linearly (i.e., table cell by table cell), it is generally easier to parse tables when they are set up as simple tables (See Fig. 1 & 2).
