What is Globus?

Globus is a tool used to transfer data between Globus endpoints and your computer. Globus greatly simplifies moving large quantities of data between institutions. Many National Labs and Universities maintain Globus endpoints.

Globus First Time Setup

The first time you use Globus you need to configure your account. Begin by going to the Globus login. You will be asked to select your insitution from a list of participating institutions.

Globus login page prompting users to sign in with an organizational account. A drop-down menu is set to “University of Missouri System” under the heading “Use your organizational login.” Below the selection is a note stating that continuing indicates agreement with the terms of service and privacy policy. A blue “Continue” button appears beneath the text. Additional information at the bottom explains that Globus uses CILogon for authentication and may share username, email address, and affiliation information with CILogon and Globus.

Hit the "Continue" button and you will be redirected to the S&T SSO page. Log in with your username and password.

In the next screen, select continue.

Globus confirmation page displaying the message “Welcome – You’ve Successfully Logged In.” The page indicates that this is the first time the user has accessed Globus with a University of Missouri System login. It explains that users who previously used Globus with another login can link the new login to an existing account so both logins share the same Globus account permissions and history. Below the message are a blue “Continue” button, a “Link to an existing account” button, and a link labeled “Why should I link accounts?” The Globus logo appears in a blue header at the top of the page.

Then, verify that you will be using Globus for non-profit research and check that you have read the terms. If Globus asks for account permissions, click "Allow".

Adding a Collection

After your account is configured, you can add a collection to it. The following example shows how to add the Mill, but you can add any resource you have permission to access.

Begin by going to the file manager on the side bar.

Globus File Manager interface showing the main file transfer and browsing workspace. A vertical navigation menu on the left includes options for Dashboard, File Manager (selected), Activity, Collections, and Groups. The main panel contains a Collection search box, an empty Path field, and toolbar options including select all, up one folder, refresh list, and filter. No files or folders are displayed. In the center of the workspace, a message reads “Search for a collection to begin,” with a link in the lower right that says “Get started by taking a short tour.”

Click into the collection search bar. The collection that corresponds to your home directory on the Mill is "Missouri S&T Mill Directories". Click on that directory to access it.

In the main pane, the search field contains “Missouri S&T Mill,” and two collections are listed: Missouri S&T Mill Directories and Missouri S&T Mill High-Assurance. Each entry is identified as a subscribed mapped collection on Mill and displays owner, domain, and description information indicating HPC storage access for Missouri S&T. A checkbox labeled “Search All Collections” appears above the search results.

After you have added the collection, you should see your home directory. You can select a file, which will bring up a context menu on the right where you can perform actions on the file like downloading it or sending it to another globus endpoint.

The file “2026-05-gpu-42-00.log” is selected and highlighted in blue. Other visible items include log files, text files, numbered files, and a folder named “cadence.” A toolbar above the file list provides options to select items, move up one folder, refresh the list, and apply filters. On the right side, an actions panel offers commands such as Share, Transfer or Sync to, New Folder, Rename, Delete Selected, Download, Open, Upload, Get Link, Show Hidden Items, and Manage Consent. The interface is displayed in the Globus web application with a clean, table-based file browsing layout.
